Bladder campion (Silene cucubalus)
Selene is the Goddess of the moon, and this surprisingly sturdy plant has flowers that look like moons dangling down. It is related to chickweed; they are both in the carnation family. The flowers and leaves are edible, but I rarely bother, unless seized by a sudden urge to have a wild snack.

Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa)
Wild yam does grow in the woods here, but this beautiful plant in my garden was a gift from United Plant Savers. It grew very little for the first five years after it was planted, but after the root got some size on it, has claimed her place with lots of showy leaves, and the most delicate of flowers. It is the root that is used medicinally, but I am not allied with it, and can hardly imagine uprooting her, so won’t be making any medicine from this plant. |
